If you are just starting your Arabic learning journey, you have probably run into a friendly little letter that only ever appears at the very end of words: ة
. If you are a complete beginner, don’t worry—this letter is actually super easy once you know its secret!
Its name is Ta Marbuta, which literally translates to “the tied T”. Think of it as a special version of the regular Arabic letter ت, but with its ends tied together like a little bow.
Before we look at how it sounds, let’s clear up something that often confuses new learners. Depending on the letter that comes right before it, Ta Marbuta appears in two visual shapes:
Unconnected form: ة
This shape sits by itself when the letter before it doesn’t connect to the left (like in the word for car):
سيارة
(car)
Connected form: ـة
This shape attaches directly to the previous letter (like in the word for school):
مدرسة
(school)
Even though they look slightly different, don’t let that confuse you! They are the exact same letter doing the exact same job.
The Secret Vowels of Ta Marbuta Most of the time, when a word stands alone, Ta Marbuta sits quietly at the end and makes a soft, simple “ah” vowel sound. Notice how there is absolutely no T sound at the end when you say these words on their own:
مدرسة
(school)
سيارة
(car)
مدينة
(city)
So why is it called a T at all? Because the T sound is actually hiding inside, just waiting to be untied!
The magic of the invisible connection

When a word ending in ة
becomes the first part of this connection, magic happens. The knot unties, and you suddenly hear a clear, crisp T sound!

مدرسة الطالب

Did you hear it? Because the first word is now connected to the next noun, the hidden T sound appears.

Let’s look at the word for city, which is مدينة
. Alone, there is no T sound. But if we talk about the city of Aleppo (حلب
), we say:
مدينة حلب
the city of Aleppo
We can do the same with hour (ساعة
) and lesson (الدرس
). To say the hour of the lesson, it becomes:
ساعة الدرس
the hour of the lesson
And finally, with سيارة
(car) and المدرّس
(the teacher) to say the teacher’s car:
سيارة المدرس
the car of the teacher
